Testimonial

Even though he lives about four hours away from the Sudbury campus, Paul Simms feels close to Laurentian.

Paul is a full-time distance education student  living in Alliston. He praises Laurentian staff and instructors for being so supportive of his needs as a distance student.  “At no time did I feel that I was alone in trying to comprehend the material.  Support is always available.  The instructors understand and accommodate for the challenges of distance learning,” he says.

“My family life has always been my highest priority.  I now find myself in the position where my children are getting older and I can turn my attention to my life long goal of becoming a teacher.”

Paul has always believed in the importance of higher education. He began his pos t-secondary education in 1984 when he attended Centennial College in Toronto in the automotive technician apprenticeship training program.  He became a Class A automotive technician in 1987 and worked for Toyota as a technician until 1995.  In 1995, Paul became an industrial service representative for Tennant Company.

In 2004, Paul began his psychology program studies through Envision at Laurentian University.  He started by taking a few distance education courses and gradually increased his course load.  Today, Paul is a full-time distance education student.

But Paul is not alone in pursuing a university degree.  Two of his daughters are studying on-campus at Laurentian University.  Jennifer is studying psychology and education, while Rebecca is in nursing.  His third daughter, Emily, is still living at home.  Paul’s wife, Karrie, has been very supportive of his efforts in reaching his goal of becoming a teacher, he says.

Paul’s experience with Envision has been positive.  Distance education has allowed him to study towards obtaining a university degree while staying home.  “I would recommend Laurentian University’s Envision program to anyone interested in furthering their education,” he says.

The Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) at Laurentian University was founded in 1960 to accommodate students wishing to study on campus on a part-time basis. To respond to off-campus students’ needs for autonomy and self-directed study, the distance education program was launched in September 1972. In 1986, CCE commissioned a local business to develop an identity and logo for its distance education program and Envision was the result. Since its inception, our Envision program has grown from one course to an inventory of over 360 courses offered in a variety of delivery modes and now offers numerous complete degrees and several certificate programs.

While the majority of the distance education courses are offered through CCE, many others are offered through Laurentian's federated universities:

University of Sudbury - The University of Sudbury is a university in the Catholic tradition committed to bilingualism and the heritage of Canada’s First Nations. It offers courses in Folklore, Native Studies, Philosophy, and Religious Studies.

Huntington University College - Affiliated with the United Church of Canada, Huntington offers courses in Gerontology, Philosophy and Religious Studies.

Thorneloe University College - Thorneloe is a university of the Anglican faith. It offers courses in Classical Studies, Religious Studies, Theatre Arts, and Women’s Studies.

CCE also administers the On-campus Spring Session program, as well as the Off-campus program, and offers academic counselling to all part-time students in a Bachelor of Arts degree regardless of the mode of course delivery. CCE has been the recipient of awards for excellence in programming from municipal, provincial, and national organizations.

We welcome new students and wish our current students success in their academic endeavours and profoundly hope they will join the thousands of our graduates who have realized their dreams of achieving a university education by taking our courses and programs.
